Roll Rig, a game for GMTK Game Jam 2022!

Here it is! This time, I decided to try something new... 2D pixel art! Granted, I already had experience with 2D in Scratch, but this is my first time doing 2D in Unity! It's also my first time doing pixel art!

Day 1:

As soon as I saw the theme (about 4 hours late), I instantly had an idea! Weird how things are. I either instantly have an idea or never. My idea was simple: You are at a casino and you have to rig the dice to land on high numbers using physics. Since this would be EXTREMLEY inconsistent in 3D, I decided to make my first 2D Unity game here! You play as an ant, and you have to shoot projectiles to knock the dice around so they land on 4s. I was thinking about doing a pseudo-3D effect by making the dice rotate inwards so you could get 5's and 6's, but it's defiantly an over scope. I did most of the art today, got the ant moving, the dice falling, projectiles shooting, and a pull beam working. I added the pull beam because I thought the game was too inconsistent otherwise.

Day 2:

This day, I did the sound effects and the music. For sounds, I just recorded random things and edited them with Audacium. For the music, I used LMMS with a midi soundfont  SGM-v2.01-Sal-Guit-Bass-V1.3. I decided to go with a sort of smooth style, (I'm not a pro musician; idk how to put this into words). Once I added the sound effect for the dice landing (which is unfortunatly way too quiet in the web build), it was the most satisfying thing ever. I loved hearing the dice land and it made the game so much more fun. I then added a title screen with instuctions, and a gameplay loop, and it was done, 11 hours before the deadline!

Fun facts:

The dice have increased gravity while on the floor, so they decide on what side faster! Cool little hack that makes the game feel a bit better.

The dice also have increased gravity when near the top of the screen! Prevents annoying off-screen dice!

There's also a rotation speed cap at 1 rotation/second! Sometimes specific shots could get the dice absolutely SPINNING, so this was added for obvious reason.

The shot fire, laser miss, and laser hit are all the same base sound effect, just with different pitch bending and cut-off points.

Thanks for reading through, and I hope you have a great day!
